What's The Relationship Between Bandwidth And Latency?

So what's is the relationship between bandwidth and latency? If your internet connection speed has the proper bandwidth, why does latency slow it down? Or does it? Just how exactly does latency affect your internet? These are just some of the common questions asked......what follows is some answers in both technical and layman's terms.

Latency is the time it takes your data (packets) to get from point A (your house/modem) to point B ( the destination). Latency happens because of each of the "stops" your data has to make on the way to point B. These stops, called hops, are the different routers and in some cases servers across the internet that handles and routes traffic accordingly. The more hops that get added into the route of your data, the higher your latency will become. The farther away point B is, typically higher latency is experienced, simply because there is more distance and hops encountered. Also, each of these hops can also become busy so to speak, therefore the busier they get the more time it will take them to respond to your traffic requests, hence higher latency.

Most file transfer over the Internet uses TCP/IP. The receiver constantly sends messages back to the sender (ACKS) letting it know all is will or if not which packets need to be resent. If the channel has high latency this reverse communication take too long causing transmitter to stop sending until ACKS are received.

TCP also has a slow start mechanism. The sender has no idea of end-to-end channel capability. A slow start is designed to prevent overwhelming intermediate slower links.

Esentially, your bandwidth is the speed between you and your ISP, anything outside that, your ISP has no control over.

Actually, latency may or may not be an issue. Because latency is the delay between getting information from point A to B, it's much more of an issue in interactive applications then large transfers.

With large transfers, if your bandwidth is sufficient, reliable, and properly configured, you won't notice much of a latency issue with high latency connections. Once the "pipe is primed", the data is flowing at full speed. As long as the ACK packets are returned at a regular interval frequent enough that retransmissions don't occur, the flow will be steady and the only delay is really just during the initial startup of the transfer.

However, with interactive applications, that initial delay is what really can kill you. While it's exaggerated, say you have a 1 second latency and sending a packet takes 1 second. If you are sending a file that's 10 packets long, your total connection time is 11 seconds. If you are sending a single packet and waiting for a response back of a single packet, and you do this twice, your total connection time will be 8 seconds but yet you only sent 40% as much traffic.

Web traffic is kind of in between the two. It's not typically a large transfer, but it's not highly interactive like a online game. Typical page traffic is short bursts of requests (high latency) followed by longer periods of inactivity while you look at the page. There are a few tricks that can be done to help reduce this as an issue. There are proxy servers and pre-fetch utilities that will "preload" the page for you. During that time where you are looking at the page and your connection is setting idle, the prefetcher can download pages that the current one is linked to. When you request one, hopefully the page has been cached and can be displayed much quicker. If not, you are no worse off then having to wait for it to be loaded. This can work good for more static pages but if you are looking for something for dynamic pages (e.g. Google Maps), a prefetcher doesn't work as well or at all. Also, checking to see if your browser is using the appropriate number of connections can improve things.

The bottom line is there is a relationship between bandwidth and latency. But it may or may not be an issue.

Not so many years ago, accessing the Internet was a one size fits all?technology. When you wanted to surf the web, send and receive emails, post files to a web site, or just play around on AOL, you accessed it all through your telephone line using a modem and a standard dial-up account. Which Internet Access Option is Best for You?

You may be wondering which broadband solution is the best option. While much depends on whats available in your area, for many users it comes down to a personal choice, centered on convenience, speed, and cost. Lets examine the various technologies and the relative advantages of each.

Cable Internet Access

Using your homes existing cable television lines, you can get Internet access included for an additional fee. Expect a large speed increase versus dial-up access. In fact, in many cases cable Internet access is the fastest alternative. Installation is usually completed quickly with just one visit from your cable companys technicians. You will also need a cable modem (supplied by the cable company in virtually every instance, but can be purchased separately as well).

Clearly, the biggest advantage of going with cable access is speed. All things being equal, it is the fastest of the three broadband alternatives, with a top speed of 10 Mbps (Megabits per second). Having said that, cable speeds can be substantially reduced if you share a local network with a lot of other subscribers. People living in densely packed areas, or locations where the cable company has a lot of users on the same network, will only realize a fraction of that top speed. Its a good idea to call your cable provider and ask some pointed questions about these issues before you order. Better yet, ask neighbors who have cable Internet what kind of speed they get.

DSL Internet Access

Digital Subscriber Line access utilizes your existing telephone line in an innovative way to greatly increase your Internet speeds. While cable is usually faster, DSL is substantially speedier than traditional dial-up access and offers a much-improved experience for a modest increase in cost. Installation is quick, usually only requiring a simple change at your homes phone box outside of the house by a phone company technician. You will need a DSL modem, which is included at no extra charge by most providers when you sign an extended service contract.

If you live where DSL is not currently available, be patient. Major providers like Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T are spreading their coverage areas quickly. Even many rural areas can expect to have DSL access in the coming months.

The two big advantages of choosing DSL are cost and speed. You will only need to get the modem and follow some simple instructions to configure it. If you agree to a one-year contract with your phone service provider (most major carriers), the modem will cost you nothing. And the service itself is generally in the $15-$40 per month range, making it a good bargain.

Speed is a bit trickier with DSL. It is slower than cable (top speed is about 6 Mbps), and the major providers offer different packages that limit speeds based on the price you pay per month. To further muddy the waters, DSL is whats known as a distance limited?technology. This means that how far you live from the nearest telephone company switching station determines your actual speed. Those living within a few yards will experience the highest speeds, while those at the other end of your street or block may only get half that speed. Satellite Internet Access

Satellite Internet access uses a small mounted dish and group of electronics to send and receive data through satellites orbiting the Earth over the equator. Users must have a clear view of the Southern sky (in the U.S.) from the face of the dish, unobstructed by trees, buildings, and other obstacles. Coaxial cabling connects the outdoor equipment to indoor send-and-receive equipment that then connects to your computer through a standard USB connector or network card.

The major advantage with satellite Internet access is faster connection speeds for people who live where cable and DSL are not available. Users can expect to download data at a rate that is about 10 to 30 times faster than dial-up access. While satellite Internet connections are significantly faster than dial-ups, they are slower than cable and DSL, and should not be the first choice for those who do have cable or DSL available to them. Satellite access is also more expensive than DSL or cable and can suffer outages when the weather turns ugly. Clearly, the other two are better options unless you live where they are not available.

The Bottom Line

Overall, cable and DSL are terrific broadband Internet access solutions for the majority of people who live in urban or suburban locations. Satellite access adds a much-needed alternative for folks living in rural areas, completing the coverage area for the vast majority of America and Canada. While proponents of both cable and DSL have legitimate arguments in favor of their services, deciding between them should be made on an individual basis, determined by the actual speeds and costs for each in your location.

Adverts often show broadband speeds as 'up to 8MB' which implies that customers will receive 8MB, however the speed depends on how far away you live from the exchange. In the majority of cases it would be almost impossible to receive such a speed.

Computeractive magazine asked over 3000 of it's readers to test the speed of their broadband online and compared it to what they expected it to achieve. A broadband checker toll was added to it developed by Broadband Choices to test the current speed of its reader's broadband service. The tool checked single connections an average of 19 times by downloading a 10MB file, this totaled around 100,000 checks overall.

The survey found that more than half of the broadband subscribers tested received less than half the bandwidth advertised by their ISP. 28% of readers received only a 1/4 of their advertised speed. Customers did not expect the results in some cases to be so low, even though they understood the advertised speed of 'up to 8MB' was not always achievable the results where still shocking. One Sky Broadband subscriber living nearby to the exchange was paying for a 16 Mbps service but only receiving 9 Mbps.

Computeractive have taken their results to Downing Street along with a petition to stop such unfair actions and misleading information. They would like Ofcom to force ISPs to provide clear information on actual speeds, instead of advertising the maximum speed they should advertise a 'typical' speed, much like the APR on credit cards.

A similar survey was carried out by Which? magazine last month, and found that the average speed of 300 customers tested was just 2.7Mbps. The lowest speed obtained was 0.09Mbps (practically dial-up speed) and the maximum speed came in at just 6.7Mbps.

Which? Informed Ofcom and Trading Standards of their findings and asked them to investigate Broadband based on their results. Ofcom made a statement at the time saying they would monitor the situation. The new survey carried out by it should hopefully prompt an official investigation, which will lead to more honest and clearer broadband advertising.

VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, is a complicated term for the fairly simple process of using your internet PC to make phone calls. VoIP has expanded in popularity recently and is now seen as a viable alternative to the humble telephone call.

VoIP uses packet switching as opposed to the more traditional circuit switching used by landlines, and can give the same quality of a call as a landline phone. It's also much cheaper, and relatively easy to set up.

There are 4 different VoIP types; PC to PC - Skype is an example of this; PC to telephone - Callserve uses this method; Telephone to Telephone - BT Broadband Voice is a form of this, and IP Phone to Telephone - Vonage is a common example.

Skype uses an instant messenger service, and both parties use a headset plugged into their PC to make and receive calls. Callserve is similar, but only the caller uses the headset, communicating with the PC at the other end. Broadband Voice use adapters which mean your phone runs through your broadband connection instead of your landline, and Vonage use phones which are, in themselves, small PC's with their own IP address.

Calling another person with VoIP is free, and therefore it is seen as a great money-saving way to communicate with family and friends all over the world. Using VoIP to call someone who doesn't have it incurs a charge, but this is usually less than you'd pay for standard calls, and is the same no matter where you call. So, you could call your friend in America for the same price as calling your aunt in Devon. VoIP is also beneficial to businesses, especially where the business is located over several sites. Internal calls can be free if the whole company is wired to VoIP.

The major concern when VoIP first began to rise in popularity was the quality of the calls; however now technology has improved to the point that it's hard to tell the difference between a landline and VoIP call. Perhaps the only drawback now is that not enough is known about it.

To start using VoIP is simple. For the basic package all you need is a broadband connection on your PC, a headset or microphone and speakers/headphones, and the use of an instant messaging service such as Skype, MSN or ICQ, which are all free to use. You can have all the features normally associated with phones; caller ID, ring back and voicemail, plus you can set up three-way calling and choose to block certain numbers from calling you.

But VoIP isn't for everyone. If you have a power failure or loss of connection, you would be without a phone altogether, so consider how you would manage in that case; perhaps a mobile phone? You may not get all the features mentioned above, or others you'd like, as different providers offer different packages. You may also have to pay line rental, and because of this many people prefer to use VoIP to compliment their landline rather than replace it. There's no doubt that the technology is useful, especially for long-distance calls, but don't throw out your landline phone just yet.

Do you remember the days? Firing up your 200Mhz turbo PowerPC, dialling up using your 56k modem, waiting an age for your hotmail page to show up, waiting some more to check your e-mails only to have your connection die just as you hit the send button! How times change.

It's funny, once you've used broadband you quickly forget how painful the dial up connection was. I used to run my business on dial up and looking back I managed rather well. But these days there's no way I could do without my broadband connection.

There's no doubt about it, broadband is well and truly here to stay. It is of course a logical progression - streaming audio and video demand much higher bandwidth and broadband connections are the only way to achieve anything which is at all usable.

A recent survey revealed that 53% of Americans who use the Internet now use a broadband connection. What they failed to point out is that obviously this means 47% still use a dial up connection. This actually equates to around 60 million people. These kind of statistics are mirrored in other developed countries. When you consider a large chunk of the developing world still uses dial up then you realize that's an awful lot of people still using a slow Internet connection.

So is it possible to speed up your dial up connection?

Well actually yes it is. There are quite a few services online these days allowing you to "accelerate" your dial up connection. These Internet accelerators claim to be able to boost the speed of your dial up connection by as much as six or seven times.

Before you scream with delight at this prospect I feel I should point out right now that these accelerator services are not high speed broadband Internet services. They use a different kind of technology based on the same idea as things like zip files and mp3 files. These files use a compression algorithm to dramatically reduce the file size.

Internet accelerators work in the same way and most providers have also implemented a caching technology whereby they store local copies of popular web sites. These local copies are pre compressed and can be sent to the user very quickly. The user has a piece of software sitting on their PC which decompresses the data as it comes in. This is how the dramatic speed increases are achieved.

Many people report excellent success with these systems. Some people are even comparing the accelerators with broadband services

So while this is a really good thing for basic web pages, the technology falls down as soon as you start working with large video or audio files etc. Since an mp3 file is already compressed there's not much more compression that can be done and so the Internet accelerator has little effect. Plus many services have a file size limit meaning they will not even attempt to compress anything as big as a regular pop music mp3 file.

But if you're just loading up normal web pages without too much flash animation and all the other bells and whistles, then I highly recommend you get yourself an accelerated service. If your ISP doesn't offer it there are plenty that do so vote with your feet and check out some of these excellent services.

T1 carrier is one of the most popular leased line options for digital transmission that offers high speed internet connectivity at 1.544Mbits per second. A T1 line is comprised of 24 individual channels, each capable of transferring data at 64Kbits per second. With T1 Internet connection, you can have uninterrupted and reliable data transfer within seconds. In normal phone lines, voices are transmitted through copper wires as analog signal and you can transmit data at around 30 kilobits per seconds with your normal modem.

Internet service by service providers convert all voice calls as analog rather than in digital format, which not only takes longer time but frustrates customers now that high speed is available. With a T1 line, you not only increase the speed of your data transmission, but also save time for your valuable online work. With the advancement of fiber optics, lesser time is required to convert analog signals to digital format. Fiber optical wires are sometimes used for T1 line to provide maximum speed, although the normal wires are by copper. In case of ordinary modem or residential telephone connection, thin copper wire is used which can rarely carry much load at the time of transmission of data. In T1 Internet connection, broadband internet connection is used which ensures two-way transmission of data at a faster rate than any other method of transmission.

Apart from that, hundreds of users can comfortably share T1 connection, which is impossible if you use modems or telephone line or an ISDN line. A Channel Service Unit (CSU) is used to connect non-data terminal equipment with a T1 Internet connection to get the desired T1 line speed. A CSU is a device which connects a leased line and remains attached to the customers system. The main objective of CSU is to encode data, which comes through a broadband T1 line. For the T1 connections, one needs to have a channel service unit.

T1 circuits work simultaneously with your existing phone wires and equipments, though you may require special jacks and connections and some alteration in the wiring to get T1 connection. It is the responsibility of your network service provider to install new wires and equipments according to the requirements. The connection not only runs through conventional metal wires but also runs through fiber optical wires, twisted pair copper wire, coaxial cable, digital microwave, and also through infrared. T1 Internet connection is used for linking remote LANs. It can also be utilized to bring Centrex service from the telephone companys central office to the business areas cost effectively.

While DSL is a quick and cost effective medium of acquiring high-speed bandwidth, it is usually not intended to support commercial applications or many users at a time. With broadband connections available more freely nowadays and more of us now having access to a personal computer or laptop, parents are being encouraged to keep a close eye on their children's online activity.

February 12th has been entitled 'Safer Internet Day' by the InSafe group. The European-wide event - which is celebrating it's fifth year of operation and awareness - was set up to encourage vigilance - both by parents and children - on staying safe online.

Schools were also encouraged to raise awareness, with many now having access to broadband connections in order to help with research during lessons. Information packs for a range of ages were provided by InSafe, who also ran a design competition of publicity material.

According to research carried out in 2007, over 40% of youngsters between the ages of 8-11 regularly used the internet, and there have been past campaigns to highlight the dangers of revealing personal information, such as mobile phone numbers and real names on internet chat rooms and social networking websites.

There have been rises in high-speed broadband connections and social networking websites over recent years, and children of all ages are being advised on how much information they post on their profiles.

What is the key to Internet marketing success for products and services?

When I first heard the "location" idea expressed - - and that was before people were taking Internet marketing seriously - - I figured that I would need to first find good locations for my merchandise business. I assumed a good location was defined as easily accessible and where were lots of people came by. In other words, high traffic.

With a reasonable cost for the location and salable products - how could anyone lose?

* As it turned out, my first venture into retailing went well, except for one small detail. That was the landlord, and I had not factored that into the equation. He upped the rent to the point that I was working for him. Unfortunately, no one had warned me about this. That was my own knowledge malfunction.

Along came the Internet and I saw that this is where the new opportunities were being created. But what about the need for a good location and a good level of traffic? Of course, Coke out-sells my niece by a factor of all the pine trees in the world to one.

But, they both have the same location. It is the search box on top of every Internet page. That is the great level playing field. That is why the Internet is where anyone with the desire to succeed in Internet marketing can do so - - with the right keys.

* My first lesson in Internet marketing was the most important. It came from a friend who spent over $10,000 for a web designer to create a site for his imported leather goods business.

The site did not work well. His sales were slow and he lamented the fact that he had made this large investment. But he told me that he had learned a powerful lesson about Internet marketing which he summed up with the question, "What are the 3 most important things you need for successful Internet marketing? His answer, "Knowledge, knowledge, knowledge!"

* The next question that I needed to have answered is where do I get this knowledge? I did not wish to repeat mistakes of the past or learn from costly trial and error. Why reinvent the wheel?
